The Journey of a Human Rights Defender:
From Inner Resilience to Global Impact

About Turid Heiberg.

A Legacy of Activism and Systems-Thinking
My work has always been driven by a refusal to look away. Whether navigating the complexities of international policy or the inner landscapes of the human mind. My mission is to support communities and amplify the voices that have been silenced.

My path began in the 1970s as a student in Oslo. I stepped into activism and journalism to ignite conversations that multicultural Norway was ignoring. This early fire led to the co-founding of the Norwegian Centre Against Racism and the MiRA Resource Centre for Black, Immigrant and Refugee Women.

This grassroots foundation evolved into a career of high-level systemic change. My academic and professional journey has included:

  • Research and Teaching: Conducting vital research at PRIO and teaching political science and sociology at the University colleges and the University of Oslo.

  • International Leadership: Serving with Save the Children as a regional leader in South and Central Asia, where I bridged the gap between governments and NGOs to strengthen protective systems for children.

  • European Policy: Shaping progress through the Council of the Baltic Sea States and the World Childhood Foundation.

  • Independent Advisory: Since 2019, I have consulted for institutions and ministries across Europe, focusing on anti-trafficking, violence prevention, social inclusion and multisectoral support for children.

Every transformation begins with a single conversation

Whether you are seeking a partner in advocacy or a fellow traveler on the path to resilience, I would be honored to hear your story.

When Inner Clarity Meets Human Dignity

The Heart Behind the Academic

My professional life has taken me across continents, from policy rooms and academic institutions to grassroots organisations, guided by one principle: human dignity is the cornerstone of any meaningful development. I have collaborated with leaders, queens, presidents, policymakers, and innovators around the world, however the most formative experiences have always come from learning how people rise, rebuild, and reclaim their agency when given the right conditions.

My work was to analyse complexity, map systemic patterns, and translate research into impact. Yet over the years, I realised that knowledge alone is not enough; clarity must be embodied, and dignity must be practiced. That understanding is what moved me from being strictly an academic to becoming a storyteller and communicator of lived insight.

In 2025, during a gathering in Stockholm, I met Marco Robinson, founder and editor of the international bestselling series Start Over: Turn Any Loss into a Sensational Comeback.
That meeting led to an unexpected and deeply meaningful collaboration. I committed to contributing a chapter to
Start Over, Series One, Volume 9; recording an audio version for Start Over Voices, Anthology 1; and developing this book, including an audible version.

Sharing my reflections in this series was about illuminating the universal patterns of resilience, identity formation, and psychological renewal. It marked a natural progression in my work: integrating decades of research with a global perspective shaped by my own life.

Today, I carry with me the cultures, languages, and human stories that have shaped my worldview. Home, to me, is less a location and more a place where clarity, compassion, love and purpose converge.

"Being nothing, empty of old stories, means being everything,
without carrying the burden of history."

I believe that lasting change must support people on the outside while strengthening their resilience on the inside. This philosophy guides my writing today.

A Legacy of Evidence-Based Advocacy

Drawing from decades of inquiry, my work bridges the gap between high-level academic research and practical, human-centered policy. I have authored in over 100 publications, including scientific books, regional reports, and specialized research on human rights. Engaging diverse audiences through documentaries, film scripts, and over 50 articles in professional magazines and journals to amplify voices that are often ignored.

Best selling co-author

For the first time, I moved beyond systemic research to share the personal story of how my life shaped who I am today. In Book 9, I wrote alongside thirteen other remarkable individuals, each sharing experiences to help others find their way through their own transitions. While my specific volume features fourteen voices, I am part of a vast global network of nearly 200 authors across the series.

  • A Shared Journey: Connecting with a community of open-hearted people who believe that sharing our stories can ignite a new paradigm of joy and freedom.

  • The Power of Proximity: Proving that while we build systems to support, it is community that sustains us.

  • Instant Impact: Published in February 2026, the book became an instant bestseller on Amazon, reaching people worldwide.

Coming in Spring 2026, rooted in lived experience, my first solo fiction book

The Heart Library

What's love got to do with it? Everything

They meet in Bhutan for a conference: from Nigeria, Chile, Portugal, Nepal, Bhutan, and Norway, expecting discussions and formal exchange. Instead, something far more unexpected begins.

In the evenings, after the sessions, their conversations drift into uncharted territory, revealing a deeper intelligence within life itself. They call this hidden space the Heart Library, a place where truth, courage and compassion reside. For a few luminous days, they glimpse who they might become if nothing held them back.

Yet when they return home, life intervenes. Standing at the edge of personal and political turmoil, a question emerges: Can they hold on to what began in Bhutan, and if so, what would it require of them?

As these six individuals awaken to a truth deeper than circumstance, their lives are forever changed. Their intertwined journeys reveal how transformation truly unfolds: uneven, humbling, and courageous.

And once the truth calls you, it never lets you go.
